History of the World Family Park
In August 3, 1946, the Holiday World opened and was founded by Louis Koch under the name of Santa Claus Land. The park was also the first themed park in the United States. The rides of the park were designed for the whole family and though small, it was still able to host celebrations during Christmas.
By the year 1984, expansion of the park began and included sections for Halloween and the Fourth of July; this was done in order to have a wider target tourists. As thus, the name of the park was later changed to Holiday World from Santa Claus Land. During the same year, a log flume ride, namely the Frightful Falls, was added. Also, in accordance to the park’s new name, several rides’ names have also been changed, i.e. Arctic Circle to The Roundhouse.
It was not until the year 1993 when the Splashin’ Safari was added. The water park originally included the Crocodile Isle, which is a children’s water-play section that features animal-themed water slides. More so, the Congo River attraction and other two huge water slides were added. A year later, the wave pool was added.
A million-dollar expansion that included Bakuli, a large water slide and the Turkey Whirl was initiated in the year 2007. Also in the same year, the park broke its record for attendance when it reached over one million visitor pass.
Layout of the Holiday World
The attractions at the Holiday World are divided into four sections, such as: Halloween, Christmas, Fourth of July and Thanksgiving.
The Halloween section contains the Legend and the Raven. These two are the park’s full-sized roller coasters. The section also contains the Frightful Falls, Scarecrow Scrambler and the HallowSwings. The Raven is based on the classic poem by Edgar Allan Poe with the same title. On the other hand, the Legend is themed on the Legend of Sleepy Hallow since the riders will dash through the woods of the park as if being chased by the Headless Horseman.
The Christmas section of the park is located at the entrance. The attraction includes a huge Christmas tree, a nativity scene, the Applause fountain, Kringle’s Knife and the Rudolph’s Reindeer Ranch.
The second largest area of the park is the Fourth of July. The section contains the Liberty Launch, Revolution, Raging Rapids, Rough Riders, Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride and the Freedom Train.
Lastly, the Thanksgiving area of the park features a centerpiece called the Voyage. Additionally, the Thanksgiving section also includes the Gobbler Getaway, Turkey Whirl and the Plymouth Rock Café.
