Satek Winery - Fremont, Indiana

Satek Winery - Fremont, Indiana.jpgSatek Winery - Fremont, Indiana

This winery began as a 10,000 gal. facility in 2001 and has produced approximately 13,000 gal in the last year.  With production going so well and people enjoying the wine so much the winery has undertaken a huge expansion project adding a total of 3,700 sq. ft!

The winemaker and co-owner of the winery is Larry Satek who believes that the expansion will be a benefit to the wine industry in Indiana where he makes his quality wine.

The winery is on lnad that is owned by the family and sits on the north end of Lake James.  The land used to be an apple orchard prior to it becomeing rundown and overgrown. It was then that they turned it into a vineyard in 1992.

Because of the success of the winery they now purchase nearly 80% of their grapes from other wineries in Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania.  Some are even purchased from California.

Did you know that an acre will produce approximately 3-7 tones of grapes and that a ton of grapes will produce about 150 gallons of wine?  It takes nearly 5 years for a newly planted grapevine to reach full production and another 2 years to reach full flavor maturity.  They produce well for about 35 years and then start to decline but could live for up to 100 years!

The winery is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 pm. Tours are available on weekends as needed.  They will give tours during the week if they are not working in the production area.  Otherwise, you may watch them do bottling, labeling, or their tasks through the windows to the production room.  Tours may also may be made by appointment; they encourage you to call ahead for groups to insure that they have sufficient staff available to make your visit more enjoyable.
